Podcasters are in up in arms over Ustream.tv

REVISED:

[ad#digg-right]Podcasters and LifeCasters alike are not so happy with Ustream.tv right now. They have started to introduce there own ads overlay to where the lifecaster or podcast involved doesn’t get any revenue. One such Podcast right now is Mike Smith, Host of the Miketechshow Podcast, and Also Todd Cochrane, Host of Geeknewscentral.  In a Recent post from Todd, he stated he is going to leave Ustream.tv.

[ad#ad2-right]Mike Smith in his last Podcast talked about this subject and why he is really unhappy with Ustream.tv.  He says that the ads could possible violate his TOS with Techpodcast Network.  He also would like to share the revenue because he was one of the founding podcasters that started to use Ustream.tv.   He’s worried that there will be adult theme ads showing on his video stream and that He wants this to be family friendly.  He’s said before the show if he has to he’ll go to other networks.   Some of the networks that might help him out:

Ustream.tv is the one Mike is having problems with but I tell you this in case someone is looking for streaming media platform.   These others I’ve checked out are decent and have there own look and feel.  Each one has its own personality and server capabilities.   So it will be a test on the next platform that Mike decides on!  I provide these to better help people make the right choice and also let people know about Ustream.tv Not telling you about the ads. If you think they shouldn’t be doing this, talk about it and Blog about.

Cricket USB UM100 Broadband Wireless Modem Review.

The UM100c is No Longer Available, Please check out the Cricket [intlink id=”3059″ type=”post”]A600 Modem Review[/intlink] Or the [intlink id=”4523″ type=”post”]UM185 Broadband modem[/intlink]. The UM185 modem might be a replacement to the UM100.

After a full week of playing around with this USB wireless, I wanted to talk about it. So let’s break it down into pieces.

  1. [ad#text-broadband1]
  2. Installation —  The installation of the USB was not to difficult.  I did have to do some more steps than this:  Install the Software, then hooked up the USB device to the USB port.
  3. Manual Activated the Broadband —  For some reason in my area they had several people have problems with the broadband activation.  So I had to activate it manually!!

After that all went well, I was on the internet just a cruising along.  I did however wonder why I was getting such a slow response speed.  When I went traveling I thought I would share some of my local results with you to better show you my speed.  All these test were done at

my speed test around town

Please see an updated post on how to get even more speed from the broad band modem.
This speed is not the true speed for the broad band modem
.

The Percentages over the results are showing you just what my signal strength was when I was doing the test.  Two of the 4 were traveling on the highway and the other two were stationary.  I also know that my speed will vary along with signal strength, I know I have to be a mile or less from a tower to get 100%.

*Update* 12/21/08

[ad#cricket-1]In my other post I talk about why I didn’t get the speed I expected, but after I did the activation I went to normal Mobile Broadband speeds.   I also now have been using the USB Modem for my main internet without any or much problems.   I know I can’t play any major online games but I can at least have the internet with me were ever  I go.   As long as you stay in the coverage area, you should be in good shape.  .  Like I Said I’ve used it in my area for over a 1 month and with the small little problem, the speed has been really dependable and I haven’t had any major issue with connectivity. I’ve been using this modem as my main internet and have not seen any major internet and have not seen any of the cap come my way.   I think they won’t mind to much as long as you don’t ABUSE the internet, for example don’t use it for bittorrent downloads and you should be fine!!

Update 12/24/2008
I also did travel with my laptop to another city, and I got to say it was really good and how it did when I went from one city to another. Check out the report here.
According to some post and forum talks around the the internet they are talking about the soft cap of 5 Gigabytes but that seems to not be so important right now.   After all, they have to make money some how.   I will update as necessary when I find anything else out.

update 1/01/09

I also did a video and uploaded it to youtube using the broadband connection. I had no problem uploading this video to Youtube. I’ve embedded it in this web page. See it on the bottom:

I also bought the [intlink id=”3059″ type=”post”]A600 Cricket modem[/intlink] and I absolutely love this modem because of the things you can do with it.

Memorex releases a cheaper Blue Ray player than a PlayStation 3.

According to there website It can do this:

* Progressive scan Blu-ray Disc player 1080p capability for higher definition video content
* Full HD 1080p, DVD up-conversion up to 1080p (480p, 720p, 1080i, 1080p), 24p, 60p video frame rate
* Multi-channel audio content (supports more advanced Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD)
* BD-ROM, DVD-ROM, DVD, DVD-R/-RW, DVD+R/+RW, DVD-R DL, DVD+R DL, CD-ROM, CD, CD-R/-RW
* 16:9 / 4:3 picture select
* On-screen graphical user interface
* Slow motion function (2x – 4x – 8x)
* RW/FF play function (2x – 4x – 8x – 16x)
* VFD display

[ad#ad2-left]The price of the unit at Memorex is 269.99$.   I think this is a great buy if all you need is a blue ray player.  Cheaper than buying a PS3.  Although if you want to buy a PlayStation 3 to play games and also watch movies on it that is still a good deal.   So why buy this player,  this will  not play games and keep your happy.

Rumor: GE to be the next to layoff its workers!!

GE to Layoff 11,000 Workers!! GE to Layoff it workers!

According to sources of friends close to me, their seems to be a consensus that there will be a major layoff coming from GE. My source is talking about it being a lot of people will be laid off and that it will start happening in the coming weeks.

According to Yahoo Finance saying this “52 week change of GE is -50.86% from last year. ”

[ad#ad2-right-1]Now last year this time there Stock Price was 38.38 a Share and now they are 18.60 a share.  They dropped -19.78 over the year.   The seemed to get close to the 38.38 a share on April 4, 2008 with making  37.56 a share.  That was there highest this year, due to the fact that people were getting there income tax refunds in the mail.    Also NYSE says they had a slight increase in July and Aug, that is due to the Stimulus package that we got in 2008.

Now I’m not a financial expert in the least.  I just see what I see with stock prices.  These could mean they are doing extremely well, or they could indicate that the company is planning on laying people off.  I’m just trying to provide a background on why they might lay people off.  We are getting to he point of becoming a Depression and no longer a Recession.  What do you think?

Time Waner needs to get off it’s DUFF!!

I was listening to Geek News Central, and he sent out an appeal for people to make a comment or blog about Time Warner and to talk about this Bandwitdth Cap they are testing!!

So here’s my thoughts and concerns about this 40 Gigabyte for 55 dollars cap.

Let’s say you have the basic service with broadband cable access. You use your broadband service for several things. Some of these things are VOIP(Voice Over Internet Protocol), Such as Skype or AIM , Download movies or Shows from Itunes store and watch shows also from Hulu or Fancast. Now Let’s talk about the math of this.

If we are under this bandwidth cap, we call someone we would be watching our minutes and time talking to whoever we are talk to. If we want to download a movie from Itunes the shows for Itunes are on Average from Itunes around 500 megabytes per show and 700 megabytes for a movie. Now we know it could be bigger or smaller depending on the Graphical textures of the movie. If you want to get a movie in High Def, the download would be around 1.5 gigabytes of space. Now this alone doing the math would add up to 80 tv shows, 50 movies, 26 HD movies. Now if you didn’t do anything else with your ISP you would of course be in good shape. Now let’s not forget about the streaming TV shows and Movies you can watch from Hulu and Fancast. Now Hulu offers HD clips, they are talking about adding HD movies and other things. I use Hulu and Fancast as my primary way to watch shows legally and not have to worry about using Time Warner. I don’t like the idea of having Time Warner try to push this on me so I’d figure I show you just how quickly you would use up the 40 Gigabytes of bandwidth.

Now the way I see it, I don’t need Digital Cable, I get all my local cable through the Air and I watch what I want from these other media sources, I feel that I can get all my media through the Internet and decide what is proper to watch and not have to worry about Ratings on the digital cable. I know everything that is broad casted over the air is rated PG-13 and when my kids get old enough, I will not have to worry about that aspect of growing up.

Now what does that mean, I want everyone to Contact Time Warner, and make a statement saying they do not think this cap is fair or right!! You can also Call Time Warner at 212.484.8000 That is their Main HQ, and tell them directly that you are concerned about this Cap and that if they do this you’ll find some where else to go. Make a Stand and sound out!!! This is a Campaign to make these Media companies know we have the right to decide what we want and when we want it, we don’t have to have there media we can get our media as we want. If we don’t do this, there will be no hope for us all!!!
