Challenge the Challengers, Part Duex

Calling all Geeks: Keith’s SysAdmin Meme

Now I’m call all you out!!

As you can see I’ve got Several people here who you don’t think would reply or even think about doing this.  I have a plan.  I want these people to tell their story about this memo.  I challenge them to actually post their responses on their blog or Podcast.  I want to hear your story about the old days.  I want to find out all about what people think or did to get into the IT profession!! I have this grand Idea to hear from the people and find out their story.  That is why if you do talk about the memo link back to me so I’ll know.

If you think you’re not a computer geek or a Sysadmin, I know better.  I am sure you have family or friends that you’ve had to work on their computer for some reason or other.  You have the skills even if you didn’t know it.  I want to know how you got into the IT Field.  I want to compile all this information to help people to get into the field and all this information is valuable to people.

I dare you Scoble, Mark, and the Co-founders to be the first to do it.  You know you want to!!!

Calling all Geeks: Keith’s SysAdmin Meme

In response to the Mind Of Root Podcast, I’ve decided to add my own comments.  I think Keith had a brilliant idea and wanted to add my answers to this.  So Here goes:

How old were you when you started using computers?

I was around 9 or 10 when I started using a TI-994A!

TI-994a Computer

As you can see this was very fun to use because of the fact that you had to use cartridges to play games on. I thoroughly enjoyed it.   I like some of the programs in basic and Basica before Dos came around.  I learned so much from the system.  You could create the complex programs and save them to a tape.  It was before the 3 1/2 floppy.  It was hard work to make these programs but I loved every part of it.

What was your first machine?

This goes back to the first question.  My first Machine was the Ti-994a.  You could have game cartridges and such, I loved that little machine.  I would come home from school and program , play with the System or taking it apart.  I enjoyed it so much I still like to use my basic emulation to program!! I’ve got so many fond memories of the system and to this day will always enjoy it.

What was the first real script you wrote?

My first script was in the Ti-994a basic and it was designed to Mimic the human speech pattern.  With my system I had a tape recorder I could use to save the data to keep programming with it.  It was not the best program but I learned so much with the programming experience.

What scripting languages have you used?

The scripting languages that I’ve have used are Pascal, Basica, QBasic, Basic, C++, and DOS scripting with the Win-Get program. It is designed to get programs and install automatically without a user.  It’s good for when you have a new system that you need to install a several programs that you’ve decided are the best.

What was your first professional sysadmin gig?

My professional gig, isn’t one that most people consider when they get into this field.  I work from my house on the side to repair computers for anyone who needs it.  My daytime job isn’t even in this type of the IT field but sooner or later someone will see my talent and will hire me or I will start making so much money from home.  I’ll be able to quit my daytime job.

If you knew then what you know now, would have started in IT?

That is a hard question to answer because I knew what I was getting into when I started my home business.  I think I’d have to say I would still be doing what I’ve have done and what I will do.  I love working on computers and finding all this problems that you would never expect or want.  I love trying to figure out what most people have the hardest time figuring out.  I will always enjoy seeing what comes out of my work.

If there is one thing you learned along the way that you would tell new sysadmins, what would it be?

Not all people are understanding of the IT field.  We need to give them a lot of leeway as to prevent ourselves from getting to much stress and embarrassment.  It is well known that people become angry with the IT field because they don’t understand it.  They  will lash out at us because they do not know any better.  All I have to say to the anyone wanting to get into the IT Field IS:  “Customers aren’t always right but we aren’t always right either.”  You have to work with your customers to prevent confusion for that one reason.

What’s the most fun you’ve ever had scripting?

The most fun I’ve had with scripting is in the old days with Basic making a pac-man clone with basic.  It wasn’t the best but I sure did enjoy the challenge of coding it.  I didn’t do anything like Keith did with is coding.  I do like to have fun with basic and it’s still my favorite because it is so simple and easy to use.    It all depends on what you have need of but I will always like basic and how much I’ve have learned from it.

Who am I calling out?

Vista pleas for Acceptance!!

I’ve heard people talking about Windows Vista and how bad it is. I’ve decided to write a post about my experiences with Vista to better show you that Vista is not as bad as people say.

“I hate the User Account Control(UAC for Short)” I’ve hear people talking about how the UAC is so annoying, always popping up when you least expect it. It can be fixed in several ways:

  1. Disabling UAC You can do this by clicking Start and typing in MSCONFIG and going to the tools tab. Hitting the Disable UAC click Launch button!!
  2. Tweak-UAC — This little program is supposed to change UAC to be less annoying, or if you like to disable UAC for good. This program is good for Turning on AUC, Making UAC less annoying or Disabling it!!
  3. Live with it — This one is self understanding.
  4. Buy XP before it’s too late! — Yes that is right just go out and buy as many copies of XP before it’s too late!!

“The Aero Glass effect takes up to much of the system resources!” — I have a thought on this one. I’ve been using Aero Glass effects since I’ve had it but I’ve had to change some of the settings to better help my system handle it.

  1. Setting Aero Glass for best performance — Right click desktop, click Personalize
  2. Click  on “Open classic Appearance properties for more color options”
  3. Select one of the other propers like classic or If you want to use some of the other features of Vista put it on the Vista basic!!!

Now with these steps you too can have a pleasurable experience with Vista.  You can always go back and change them with little effort.  I am hoping with this little blog to help people understand that “Vista is your Friend”.  Also in the news,

Vista’s big problem: 92 percent of developers ignoring it

So that means not a lot of programs are going to even work with Vista.  Does that seem fair, I say not!!  Shouldn’t they start worrying about Vista since XP is going off the market?  You know they seem to think XP is going to live forever!!  I think we need to start telling these people to develop for Vista so we can get more programs working with Vista.  Vista wouldn’t be so misunderstood if they’d have compatible programs for Vista.  Just some thoughts!!

3 Reason why Friendfeed is dying!!

So I been watching Friend Feed the last few days, I’ve seen Mark Trapp talking about trolling. I also seen Robert Scoble saying he finds this interesting, and I’ll quote Mark Trapps Post about it:

http://friendfeed.com/e/ffc08931-e0ab-40e9-9d21-7dfb353f5878/Are-you-a-blogger-Are-you-short-on-cash-this-week/

First Reason — So as you can see this is what people call page trolling! They try to get people to visit there page and get a page count. I say this is a FOUL, and you need to take a time out in the booth for doing this. I don’t want to see this getting on friend feed. I hope FF comes up with a way to let you put in keywords to ignore and such that would be so nice.

Second Reason — They have to make comments about blogger and Twitter. I don’t want to hear stuff about twitter and how they can blog this stuff up all day long!! It’s like the Gilmore Gang talking about getting a Hair Cut. This really needs to change and become a better feed then it has in the past. I will get flame comments or even flame mail but it’s the truth!!

[ad]

Third and Final Robert Scoble talked about this in his post about advertising the Gilmore gang, I guess I did that in the last reason and You can see how this will result in people see that I am actually reading this stuff, so it is going to be the death of me in the long run!! I say we can’t get sucked into these type of post or comments. We need to become a better blogger and commenter on the feed to get people to see the post!! Trust me, if you make it they will come!!!

It’s up to all of us to make Friend Feed the best it can possibly be on the Internet. Let’s make Friend Feed the next Cloud Computing!!

5 things Microsoft Vista doesn’t want you to Know!!

I’m starting off on this little epic because I’ve been using Vista for the past year and half. I have had so much fun finding these little programs for Vista. They’ve helped with making Vista a much more enjoyable platform. These programs I’ve had to search the internet for all these tips and programs.

[ad]

  1. Never Stop using MSCONFIG.EXEThis little program lets you do so many things in Vista it’s not funny. You can Enable or Disable UAC, pick the services you want to startup, or pick the startup programs. You can also use the performance monitor, or change the internet options in the Tools tab. You can speed up or slow down your start up time in vista with this little program.
  2. Shut down Auto-Defragmentation — Windows uses way to much resources with it constantly defragmenting the hard drive. This therefore slows down the startup and shut down time with Vista. This little process will greatly increase your speed. Just remember from time to time to do a manual defragmentation on your hard drive. Click Start>Click Drive>Click tools TAB>Un-Check Run on a Schedule.
  3. [ad]

  4. Speed Up the Interface — This little article explains some of the best kept secrets about speed and making windows Do what you want it do.  Making boot up time even faster and not slowing you down.  I thought I’d just link to this article because of all the valuable tips and tricks they suggest in it.  If you have any others just put those in your comments.
  5. Enable Readyboost — using a 2 gig or higher USB interface or Card will greatly increase your startup and shutdown routines in Vista.  You will not have to wait as long for Windows vista to boot.  Extreme Tech Did a very good job talking about this so I just linked to them.
  6. Disable all non-needed programs from startup — Most of the time at startup you get all these programs that you don’t need or want.  Disabling the programs you don’t use will greatly increase your speed.  Be advised that some programs need to be run at start such as Anti-virus, Anti-Spyrware, and Firewalls and other such things like that.  Don’t advise you disabling all of them just the onces that aren’t needed or wanted.  To disable the programs run Msconfig.exe>click startup>Un-check programs that you don’t want.  Reboot and your there.

I hope you like what I posted and remember that there is much more to come in the future.  I will post more later.  Enjoy
