Is there a Difference between AntiMalware and Antivirus?

Is there a Difference?

In any system, we’ve all asked that question once or twice. Even I’ve asked that question at least once and I am sure it is a really slippery slope when it comes to defining if there is or isn’t a difference. We can analyze each one in parts but still come back with a question because each has its benefits in today’s economic atmosphere.    According to Wendy Zamora:

A virus is a piece of code that is capable of copying itself in order to do damage to your computer, including corrupting your system or destroying data.

So we can see a virus is specially designed code to copy itself and to do some really nasty things in your system but is that all it does?  Let’s dig a little deeper on this topic.

AntiMalware Vs AntiVirus?

When you hear Antimalware?  Does it bring anything to your mind or give you any ideas of what it is that they are doing or is it just a word you’ve heard?  According to Panda Security:

Antimalware and antivirus are not the same. They complement one another to act as the highest level of defense against malicious software, along with healthy online habits.

As you can see both of them aren’t the same and yet they do a lot to help each other out because they make what most people would call a layered security.   They help prevent some of the low profile infections that we seldom hear.    These programs create what I call a layered security.  Each one works to prevent all sorts of infections in a computer system and also helps keep your data safe from ransomware.

What should I do?

This is a common question when it comes to how to protect your system from all these different threats.   I personally use AVG Internet Security for my Home system and Malwarebytes also to help protect my system.   I really like AVG because it was simple to use and they have a great free version of it to download and use.  Another good one that I like to use is Superantispyware as a way to check my system from time to time and make sure it doesn’t see anything that those other two might miss.  Even if you only use one of each, you are far better off than just waiting for that infection to happen or that data loss to happen.   It can be quite troublesome if you don’t protect yourself and your data and keep the antivirus and antimalware up to date.

Do you have a favorite Antivirus or Antimalware?  Why not leave a comment and tell me why you like your choices?  I’d love to hear what you think of AVG, Malwarebytes or even SuperAntiSpyware?

How Malwarebytes Pro and SuperAntiSpyware Pro keeps me safe!

Virus - Don't let it get in the window

Malwarebytes and me!

I’ve been using Malwarebytes Pro for the past few years.   Ever since 2009, I’ve used Malwarebytes Pro has always been my go to for getting rid of those really hard to get rid of viruses and malware!  I must say I haven’t had a virus or malware on my system yet.   I often travel to libraries and other such places where you never know what may happen.  Even though I use VPN4ALL, also to help protect my privacy, it doesn’t make me invisible to viruses and malware!

Over the Past 4 years!

I’ve had to disinfect my sisters computers and some other family members who have yet to learn that you have to keep your antivirus up to date and current.   The problem is AVG and other are only valid for one year.   Unlike them, Malwarebytes Pro is a lifetime license.   No matter how long you use your laptop or desktop you keep getting updates on software and virus definitions.

SuperAntispyware and Malwarebytes!

I use SuperAntispyware Pro and Malwarebytes Pro in tandem when I need to remove a virus or malware.   Both of these are sponsors of the blog, and I earn a little commission when you buy using these links.  With each of these you get a lifetime license and this saves me money because I don’t have to worry about buying a anti virus license every year or two.   I’ve probably saved several hundred dollars from not having to buy new licenses.  Although I am probably one of the few who know about what could happen if you click links your not sure of.   So by saying these have stopped me from getting a virus may be a overstatement on my part.

I could go on!

If I just kept talking about these two products you would probably get tired of hearing me.   I have had much success with both of these products to keep and also help get rid of those really troublesome viruses and malware that may be hidden on your system.   This isn’t going to be over but this will be coming back.   If you know someone who might need to know about a good Antivirus Software or Antimalware software.   Send them to these two sites and I am sure there problems are going to go away quickly.

Microsoft kills a fake antivirus tool from 994,061 computers!

According to Arstechnica and I’ll quote:

[ad#ad2-left]Win32/FakeSecSen has gone by various names, including Micro Antivirus 2009, MS Antivirus, Spyware Preventer, Vista Antivirus 2008, Advanced Antivirus, System Antivirus 2008, Ultimate Antivirus 2008, Windows Antivirus, XPert Antivirus, Power Antivirus, and Ultra Antivirus 2009. Furthermore, it is skinnable, so each of these variants has a different GUI, although the basic functionality is the same: bother users with warnings of malware until they pay up.

The Microsoft Malware Protection Center recently released some data on how the removal tool performed this month: FakeSecSen was removed from 994,061 machines. That number isn’t the highest Microsoft has recorded before, and the number of removals depends on which malware Microsoft adds each month and how widespread it is.

[via Arstechnica]

This seemed to of happened this month with the usual Windows update.  If you haven’t updated your system just yet you should.   This troublesome fake virus seems to have been killed  from several systems.  This could effectively make it harder for these guys who ever designed this program to make money.  I hope microsoft does even more virus removals in next month.  If you still want to try to get rid of these viruses don’t forget to check out my tips on Virus removal.
