Blasting the Downadup.b/Conflicker back to the Stone-age!

It has been talked about the last few days where there is a worm hitting the computers who haven’t done the Microsoft Update MS08-067 which was release out of cycle and still have some systems has not been patched.  It has also been reported that it is spreading around the internet really quickly.   According to Computer World:

[ad#ad2-right]The worm, which was first reported by Panda and other security companies on Dec. 31, 2008, exploits a vulnerability in the Windows Server service that’s part of all currently supported versions of Microsoft’s operating system, including Windows 2000, XP, Vista, Server 2003 and Server 2008.

[via Computer World]

It seems Microsoft has scolded people who haven’t patched for the October emergency update. Accusing users of playing “Russian Roulette”  and scolding them for not promptly updating their system to remove the vulnerability.

Symantec Blogged about this security of this program and how it was a variant of Downadup.b.  It also talks about how they are seeing an even more increase on this worm that was supposed to be patched by people who use Windows 2000 Server.

[ad#ad2-left]F-secure did a post about Downadup/Conflicker and how they took an Preemptive domain block list for this worm.   They have also seen an increase in this worm and they are trying to prevent this worm from gaining ground.   Talking about this being a network worm, in more ways then one.  Some have even seen it being sent through USB drives.   If you have a system you want to protect you should stop autorun.

Here are some links to better help you get this worm off your system:

In order to remove this worm, you must do a complete system scan with any of the free virus scanning programs.  You’ll need to update your virus database before you do the scan.  You may even want to try the free virus scanners tha are online to get rid of this worm.   These should help you get rid of this worm, but you must remember to install the update or you will get the worm again.  The MS08-067 Patch should be installed as soon as possible you can find the patch here.

Patch list for Patch Tuesday January 2009

I just got the update of what will be patched and what will I expect to be patched, Here is my list of what will be coming on Patch Tuesday, January 13, 2009:

  • [ad#ad2-right]Update for Windows Mail Junk E-mail Filter [January 2009] (KB905866) — Keeps those junk emails from getting into your system.
  • Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool – January 2009 (KB890830) — This is a usual thing for Microsoft and should not be messed with.
  • Windows XP Service Pack 3 (KB936929) — Changes made to the were made for the Metadata but nothing else.
  • Critical update — Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Pack 4, Windows XP Service Pack 2 and Windows XP Service Pack 3, Windows XP Professional x64 Edition and Windows XP Professional x64 Edition Service Pack 2,  Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 and Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2, Windows Server 2003 x64 Edition and Windows Server 2003 x64 Edition Service Pack 2,Windows Server 2003 with SP1 for Itanium-based Systems and Windows Server 2003 with SP2 for Itanium-based Systems.
  • Moderate Update — Windows Vista and Windows Vista Service Pack 1,Windows Vista x64 Edition and Windows Vista x64 Edition Service Pack 1, Windows Server 2008 for 32-bit Systems, Windows Server 2008 for 32-bit Systems, Windows Server 2008 for Itanium-based Systems.  (Windows Server 2008 Core Installation affected)

These were the only I could find that I expect to be deployed on the next windows updates.  I expect the really bad updates they are going to wait till last minute to tell anyone.  When they become available I’ll let you know which ones and how quickly they need to be installed.

The Cricitcal and Moderate Update for Microsoft are the same but since the NT Kernal is used for Vista and the Servers it isn’t affected as bad as the Window’s Kernal.   I would guess it will be a core installation program that would be the culprit and Microsoft is going to patch it.   I won’t find out about it till Tuesday but Microsoft has said it will only be a few updates so that is good.  We will have to wait and see!!

Reviewing Roboform: Great Password Manager

I’ve had Roboform for the last few months checking it out working with it seeing what is the pro’s and cons of it. Here’s what I’ve found out.

Limited number of passwords for non-license (Limited to 10 passcards – login information and password) — This doesn’t surprise me in fact once I’d started using it I had to buy it. You see I’ve got so many places I like to visit and so many logins it isn’t easy to track them all. This helps me login to each and everyone of them very easily. Although if you only have a limited amount of sites the free version will work well for those people too.

Defeats Key loggers — This is good for those who have family members who use the same computer just in case someone installs a virus that tries to steal your sensitive information. Can be put on a portable thumb drive with use to a library or open platforms. This also will prevent key loggers from getting your login information.

Generates strong passwords — This is a must in my field, I’m so tired of having to come up with a password. Now this is generated on the fly. Click a button and you have a password generated. Tried this out on several sites that would tell you how strong it is and all of the said excellent.

Works with Firefox, Internet explorer, and MSN/AOL — Now being that I don’t have a MSN or Aol I do not know this I have however tried this on Internet explorer and Firefox very easily. It works well with Vista no major problems. I have tried it with Google Chrome and it seems not work at all with it. I do not know if they will start supporting it and only time will tell!!

Backing up your passwords — it is really easy to back up your passwords database on Roboform. Just copy and paste and your done. No needing to find a hidden Directory, Roboform Database for Vista is in the My Documents folder under “My Roboform Data” Folder. All you need to do is copy that to a USB key and no worries Roboform automatically encrypts the passwords so without the Master password you can’t use them.

No need to remember Passwords — Yes that is right you no longer have to worry about remembering your passwords all you have to do is click a button and Roboform fills the required input forms. It can be annoying if you use the free version because you only can save 10 passwords then the rest you will have to remember.

Easily speed through login screens — This is the best part of Roboform because no more having to type in the site you need to go to login. Roboform does that for you without any problems. You just pick where you want to go and Roboform takes you through and fills the information in before you know it. I absolutely love this feature because You don’t have to type in the place you want to go it will automatically take you there.

Roboform has several version — Roboform can be made portable and also be put on PDA’s (Personal Digital Assistant) or a Mobile Phone(Windows Mobile, Palm, Symbian, or Blackberry). This is great for those who need to have your passwords on more than one type of device. Keeps it safe like big brother still need a master password to get to it. It also makes it just as easy to surf to the important websites with ease.

Download Roboform:

To Buy Roboform:

I strongly recommend this to anyone who has problems remembering passwords or want to upgrade there passwords to the next level.  This will ultimately protect you far better than trying to remember all your passwords.   This however is a personal and this will not protect you 100% but will get far closer to the 100% than just doing it alone.  Remember only you can protect your sensitive data and nothing else can stop password stealing 100% of a time.

Microsoft Readys to Layoff Around 15,000 workers

According to sources around the net, Microsoft is about to start laying off around 15,000.  One source and I’ll quote:
[ad#tim-right-free-cell-1]

Currently Microsoft employs about 90,000 people across the world and from what we’re hearing, some 15,000 of those are expected to be giving marching orders come January 15th. That’s almost 17 percent of Microsoft’s total work force, not exactly a small number.

[Via Fudzilla – Rumor Mill]

Now this is hasn’t been confirmed but is expected to happen around January 15, 2009 right after CES.  I don’t know how true this but if you want to check out the other layoffs click here.  If I hear anything else about this I’ll post it as soon as I find out.   Some other Posts your might be interested in:
