Windows update is getting a revision!

[ad#ad2-right]According to Computer World, dated Oct 31, 2008 and I’ll quote:

“Over the next couple of months, we’ll be rolling out another infrastructure update to the Windows Update agent (client code),” said an unidentified Microsoft employee on the Windows Update team’s official blog. “This update makes it possible for users to install more than 80 updates at the same time.”

Now if your like me and have several computers who need to be updated at a given schedule, you sometimes worry about these updates that come along that might just break your system. I have been using a program call Offline Updater, which does what Autopatcher does really nicely. So why is Microsoft sending out this patch? Two reasons, one they want you to be able to update your operating System without hurting your system integrity.

Now lets talk about the integrity of having to reboot your system. You see, every time you reboot the system, it causes the system hardware some strain.  It is something like having starting up a car, sooner or later you will have the starter go out, because of to much start up.

[ad#ad2-left]Second reason for this is, basically the update software needs to be update yet again for any security flaws or features that might be exploitable.  I am sure there are some and Microsoft probably knows about that we do not.   So that is the second reason, which it is the most obvious reason yet to push out another revision of the Windows update.

What about stopping the update from effecting your system.  The only way that I know of is to prevent Windows from checking for updates.  Which is simple:

Windows XP Version:

[Category View and Classic View]

<Start> / Control Panel / Security / Click Windows Updates

For Windows Vista:

<Orb> / Control Panel/ Security Center/ Windows Update / click “change Settings”

With both ways, you will be able to control four ways to handle Windows updating and they are:

  • Automatic Will download all necessary updates and install them without your permission or knowledge.  Note some of the updates will automatically reboot your system.  Most commonly they are set to do this every day in the 12am to 4 am period of time.   So when you wake up you would see an log in screen.
  • [ad#ad2-right]

  • Download updates but let me choice which ones to install and when –  This is most commonly used by people who don’t want to bother having to check manually.  It will check and download, then it will let you know.

  • Check for updates but don’t Download them –  This is like the previous one but this will only tell you.  The rest of the decision is in your hands not the computer.  This is good for people who have limited system resources, like Hard drive space.  It still reminds you like the previous one but won’t download any updates.

  • Never check for updates –  This is used for people who don’t want to be bothered with updates and have a way to update manually.  This is commonly used by businesses who have several systems on and don’t want to risk an update causing trouble or weigh down the companies internet by downloading updates un-necessarily.   This option is not to be messed with because it leaves your system with quite a lot of vulnerabilities.  You do this one if you have a set schedule to update each and everyone system. (Extremely Dangerous to do)

With what I talked about, I am hoping you find this useful and to share your discoveries with other people who might want to be able to change how Windows updates are handled on other systems.  If you have comments or questions, please post them in the comment section and someone will be more than glad to help you out.

Adobe Flash tips and Tricks!

Having been using Hulu for the last few months, I’ve had to tweak the Flash Player and I’d thought I share some tips to get your movies and shows to run smoother on some systems.  I will say this, it is not some times the system but the connection to the Internet.  Bandwitdth, for some shows are sometimes the hardest part of getting to watch the show.

From time to time, Check for updates:

Having updates will sometimes resolve the most common issues with the Flash player.  I’ve had that happen in the past, a certain version would not work right with my system.   After updating on those occasions, I’d be ready go!!  So here’s the website to go to download and install the latest version:

Download and Install Adobe Player

Why should I have to check it from time to time?

Adobe seems to not want to tell you if you have the lastest version.  So I’ve got a schedule to check it ever month and see if I have the latest version.  How can you figure that out? By downloading and installing.  If you’ve got the current version then you do not have to install it again!!

Put more access on storage!

Currently we have Terabyte hard drives, so we can have the system store more information on our hard drive.  I’m not saying that does not come without some security risk, but I do have a better time with streaming video.  By making more space available for the flash player to use, you can sometime cut down on connection speed and reliability.  I’ve had instances that once I’ve changed the amount of space for a website, I’ve gotten better video and watching experiences.  How you may ask by doing two things:

Going to your favorite video website > Run a video > Right Click on Video > Click Settings

Slide the bar to where you want it.  The default is 100 Kilobytes, I’ve got it set to 10 Megabytes.  I’ll let you choice how much.  It just depends on the space and how much your willing to give up.

Then you have to direct yourself to the adobe website and do the same there.  You have to put add the information to the cloud you could say.  Here’s the link, you can always get there by either visiting the Adobe website or clicking on the advanced tab in the settings manager.

You would then go to the website storage tab or link and go there and slide the bar to where you’ve put the other one or give it more.  You then would want to make sure adobe is using your hardware acceleration for playing movies and video.

Make sure yours has the Check Mark!!
Sometimes it is easier just to clear the Cache!

Yes, I did say clear the Flash player cache.  Here is how you do it.  You will have to go the settings manager website. The Cache is in the storage settings manager.  Then click on Delete all sites.  It will ask if your sure.  You say yes, and it’s done.

After that you should have some smoother sailing with Hulu and other websites that require flash. It isn’t hard to do but it is sometimes a pain because you have to from time to time clear out that cache on the website. If anyone else can come up with some good tips throw them out my way. Share your tips with the world.

Create Global Folder Bookmarks with Dirkey

dirkey.jpgWindows only: Create custom folder bookmarks accessible from your keyboard in any Explorer window or save or open file dialog with freeware system tray application Dirkey. You can set any folder as a bookmark on-the-fly by pressing Ctrl-Alt-0..9, then quickly jump to any of your bookmarks by pressing Ctrl-0..9 for the corresponding bookmark (e.g., if you set a folder as a bookmark with Ctrl-Alt-1, you can access that folder any time by pressing Ctrl-1). Dirkey does the work of previously mentioned applications like FindeXer, PlacesBar Editor, and FinderStyle but offers the quickest access to both creating new bookmarks and jumping to your most frequently used folders. Dirkey is freeware, Windows only.

Wrap Firefox’s Bookmarks Toolbar

wrappedbookmarkstoolbar.png
Firefox only: Yesterday you learned how to auto-hide your Firefox bookmarks toolbar, and today we’ve got the tweak to make that toolbar wrap onto multiple lines instead of scrolling off the right side. Like the auto-hide tweak, this requires a change to your Firefox profile’s userChrome.css file. Here’s the CSS you need:

/* Multi-row bookmarks toolbar */ #bookmarks-ptf {display: block;} #bookmarks-ptf toolbarseparator {display: inline;}

You can combine this technique with the auto-hide technique to make all the lines of your bookmarks toolbar appear when you hover. If you’re new to userChrome.css, here’s more on working with it. Thanks, Mike!

Nice little tip there!! Thanks

Enlarge Your Taskbar Previews with Thumbnail Sizer

Windows Vista only: Vista’s thumbnail taskbar preview feature is attractive, but unless you’ve got superhuman vision, the very small thumbnails aren’t all that useful. Freeware application Thumbnail Sizer manually adjusts the size of the thumbnail so you can super-size those previews for a much closer look at the window contents via a simple width and height slider. With some simple tweaking, your taskbar previews can be large enough for you to even be able to read text in the preview, which means you’ll be able to understand what window you’re seeing at a glance. While you’re at it, you might want to enlarge your Alt-Tab thumbnails, too. XP users, you can add Vista-like taskbar previews with freeware application Visual Tooltip.

I think this is a nice little program. If you use vista go check it out!!
