Apple Needs to Worry about Security and Virus!

Let’s Face It, Mac isn’t Virus Free no more!

I know I’ve been saying this for a few years, but In all truthfulness it is more of a fact than a few years ago.   Apple needs to change their policy on how they do commercials.   I don’t say that light hearted because I actually think the commercials are really funny sometimes but that is besides the point.  They have not in the past changed their tactics because of the new malware that is going about.   Some experts are saying this malware doesn’t require you to enter a password or even have you allow or deny the installation.  Although, I have no Apple computer to test this observation, it seems quite possible depending on how people have their system setup.   Thought most Mac users are not thinking about security or even the possibility of a virus because of the advertisements that Apple has put up in the past.   More and more their seems to be a growing number of viruses and malware for the Macintosh.

Security Through Obscurity is No More with Apple!

I say that know that in the past most Apple users always thought since the Operating system of the Apple was not well known that they could get away with installing unknown software or programs that Windows users would think twice on.   I honestly don’t see how people would download bit torrent files thinking that they were safe on the Mac because “Apple Could never get a Virus” advertising has stuck in their minds.   Yet Apple has in the past fought this through new changes to their advertising but the fact remains anytime you think of a Macintosh, you first thought would be about it being Virus.   I know some of you probably though the first thought would be the speed and ease of the Operating, and although that is true that isn’t my thought when I think of a Apple Operating System.

Don’t Presume anything!

I might not be a Mac User but I don’t presume anything when it comes to running a Windows or even a Linux Operating System.   That Being said when Apple finally realizes that they are no longer able to hide from the bad guys, then we will see them start fighting back.   Until then though, most Mac Users will make the mistakes they have always done because of Apple stance and the ignorance of the problem.  I have said how hackers will start targeting Apple Users and this seems to be the case even now.   If you have a Mac Machine, I suggest looking for a good Antivirus and sticking with them.   You are not longer safe not having an Antivirus software installed on your system.

Stay Safe!

Windows 7 Beta — Unexpected results

Now know people’s thoughts on the EULA of Windows 7 Beta. Now let’s talk about this according to a blog post From Windows Vista Places :

No benchmarks allowed. As in previous beta releases of Microsoft operating systems, the license agreement includes a prohibition on speed tests:

You may not disclose the results of any benchmark tests of the software to any third party without Microsoft’s prior written approval.

[Windows Vista Place]

[ad#ad2-right]Now We know people have put this through there test and I am sure any technology magazine has done the same. If I know people they will be doing this no matter what the EULA (End User License Agreement) has to say. Although if Microsoft was worried about Third Party’s from finding out this software it wouldn’t be to hard for them to get there hands on a key and the ISO after all it was released to the public and that means anyone could get a copy.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Apple or even some Linux Enthusiast did there own test on this OS. I serious doubt that Microsoft will come after people over this because they have made it public but let’s go in and talk some things.

I have done my own test and come to the conclusion that it is 5% to 8% faster from Vista. Although I have a Vista OEM with some bloatware software it still in an even faster boot time and shutdown time on Windows 7. I also checked out the Memory Usage of each and I find that Windows 7 Beta using almost Half of what Vista Premium is using.

Microsoft Windows 7 Beta blog says this [Windows 7 is faster, more reliable, and makes it easier to do what you want. Both the everyday things and the killer “is that really possible?”]. Now saying that they have thinned it down because the memory usage. I also find the User Interface is really well build for being a beta system. I also like the User Access Control choices, they’ve made the UAC a lot friendlier and let’s you choice how to use it better. There is of course going to be issues with Windows 7 Beta and if you have a problem you can always visit the Forums to get help solving those problems.

[ad#ad2-left]If your curious and want to test it out for yourself go find the software and do your own test, I am sure people are doing it regardless of the EULA.   I did this test to make sure Microsoft wasn’t trying to hide the truth of the Windows 7.  I wanted to find out for myself, because of how it can “seem” to be faster doesn’t always mean it is.  After my test, I am thinking Microsoft is on the right track with Windows 7 beta, and I hope they keep on track.

My Recommendations for all who read this is “Go and grab your copy and try it out yourselves“.  You only have until January 24, 2009 to get your copy of Windows 7 Beta with a Key.  Now people can do what they want but I am hoping people keep the pressure on Microsoft to make this Operating System get even better in the future, because ultimately we are the ones who will have to use the system.

Removing Win32/Bagle.HE worm

Here is another virus that seems to be spreading lately.   From the looks of it, it sees to be another email worm.  Here is what eset says:

Aliases

Email-Worm.Win32.Bagle.gt (Kaspersky), W32/Bagle.gen (McAfee), Trojan.Tooso!gen (Symantec)

[ad#ad2-right]Win32/Bagle.HE is a worm that spreads via e-mail. The size of its executable is 40565 B .

When executed the worm copies itself in the following locations:

  • Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\hidn\
    hldrrr.exe
  • Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\hidn\
    hidn2.exe

In order to be executed on every system start, the worm sets the following Registry entry:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\drv_st_key

[ad#ad2-left]It seems to have a manual removal process, Unless you pay for the other software but according to the 411 on PC Security:

Win32/Bagle.HE worm is a “threat” that appears in security scans by fake antispyware WinDefender 2008.

The danger of Win32/Bagle.HE worm is supposed to scare you into wasting $49.95 on WinDefender 2008.

Unless you like getting ripped off, don’t download the software the Win32/Bagle.HE worm popup links to. You’re not really infected with Win32/Bagle.HE worm — you’re infected with scamware that you need to remove.

I’ll show you how to get rid of Win32/Bagle.HE worm and WinDefender 2008, for free.

According to this site you can remove it by doing some steps.  I think Kaspersky has an easier way to remove it and it looks like most anti-virus software will remove this.   You need to remember that only you can prevent this from the future.   You should also update your windows update and make sure your system is up to date.
